Orchha, is a town steeped in history. It was established in the 16th century by the Bundela Rajput Chief, Rudra Pratap, and is located on the banks of the Betwa River in the Madhya Pradesh district of Niwari. Many tourists are drawn to this area by some of the most fascinating temples and palaces, which stand in all their splendour. Orchha is a gem in the state of Madhya Pradesh thanks to alluring temples, ancient monuments, and a wealth of folklore. Orchha, which has stunning architecture that combines Rajput and Mughal styles and dates back to the 16th century, served as the capital of numerous important royal dynasties for almost 300 years. Rudra Pratap Singh, a king of the Bundelkhand empire, founded Orchha as its capital in 1501 AD. Subsequent kings also held power in Orchha. It’s interesting to note that the Betwa splits into the seven Satdhara channels here. According to legend, this is done in honour of the seven former kings of Orchha. The intricately carved chhatris, or cenotaphs, which are iconic of the city itself, also pay tribute to its royals.

Orchha Fort
The Orchha Fort complex is at the centre of Orchha’s heritage. This Betwa island complex is a labyrinth of palaces, fortresses, and temples. The fort, which is divided into Raj Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, and Sheesh Mahal, conceals within its walls hidden passages, exquisite murals, and opulent royal residences.

These 14 cenotaphs, or memorials, were built between the 16th and 18th centuries. Standing as cubical buildings with temple-like spires along the banks of the Betwa river, they are a captivating sight. They are constructed in the style of temples, with one chamber in the middle and four others located on each of the four sides of a courtyard. The cenotaphs have shikhars (spirals) on the top that closely resemble those of the temples built in the Nagara style.

After visiting the fort and other temples in Orchha, this lovely and serene location is a wonderful place to spend some quality time. Ghat has steps that lead down to the river, and the stone chatris serve as the ideal backdrop.
