Khajuraho Temple, Sanchi Stupa, Madhya Pradesh

Been there recently?

Built in the mediaeval century by the Chandela Dynasty, the UNESCO site of the “Khajuraho Group of Monuments” is famous for its Nagara-Style architecture and graceful sculptures of nayikas and deities. One of the things that draws tourists to this location is the beauty of the intricate statues. One of India’s oldest stone buildings and a significant example of Indian architecture is the Great Stupa at Sanchi. In the third century BCE, Ashoka the Great, the Mauryan emperor, ordered its construction. Its main structure was a simple brick hemispherical structure placed over Buddha relics. With a height of 42 feet and a width of 106 feet, the grand structure is tall and imposing. Numerous Lord Buddha relics are kept in the stupa’s large hemispherical dome-shaped central chamber. Intricate toranas, or ceremonial arched gateways, are found all around Sanchi Stupa. These structures are typical of Indian temple architecture. The intricate carvings on the doorway are based on Buddhist jataka stories that depict the life and miracles of Lord Buddha.
