Sundarbans National Park, West Bengal

Been there recently?

Home to the unique Royal Bengal tiger, the Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1987. The Sundarbans forests, one of the largest mangrove forests in the world, are located in the Bay of Bengal on a 10,000 square kilometres delta formed by the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers. The mist-covered region is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including 260 different bird species as well as endangered species like the estuarine crocodile, Ganges River dolphin, and Indian python. The Sundarbans are a collection of low-lying islands in the Bay of Bengal that are dispersed across Bangladesh and India. It is one of the largest active delta regions in the world. A mangrove plant with the name “Sundari,” which roughly translates to “beautiful forest,” gave rise to the name Sundarbans. Rivers abound in the area, and numerous creeks and tributaries also run through it.
