Ponmudi, Kerala
Been there recently?
A lesser-known place with no less ambience than better-known places is how Ponmudi can be aptly described. Located amidst inviting valleys and mountains, this hill station has plenty to offer tourists. The smaller hills are great locations to view the nearby villages, tea and rubber plantations, and forests, whereas the grasslands are perfect locations to get soaked in mist. The low-flying clouds create a magical atmosphere during the monsoon. Ponmudi is the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate the mind and body, as it offers plenty of relaxation and hiking opportunities. At an altitude of nearly 3500 feet, the town has pleasant weather throughout the year and is home to some rare types of flowers. Ponmudi is located about 55 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram is also the nearest rail and air link to Ponmudi.

Mini Zoo
This tiny zoo, located within the city limits, qualifies as a “deer park.” A few mammals and avian species can be found there. It’s a great place to see a wide range of plant life.

Kallar village, about 15 kilometres from Ponmudi, is home to this 30- to 40-foot-tall waterfall. The Kallar stream is credited with the creation of the waterfall, and the surrounding forest is a major contributing factor to the area’s overall beauty. The waterfall is a 45-minute hike from Kallar village.
To encourage ecotourism, the villagers of Kallar have constructed a tourist destination centred on the Kallar River. The clean walkways and plentiful fountains provide a welcoming atmosphere for the family crowd.

Ponmudi residents have organised themselves into self-help groups like the Ponmudi Vana Samrakshna Samithi, whose members are dedicated to preserving the wooded areas in and around Ponmudi. They plan hikes to the three waterfalls and four hills in the area.
