Osian, Rajasthan

Been there recently?

Osian, a historic city that once was the capital of the Marwar dynasty and also part of the silk trade during Gupta dynasty (3rd-6th century) rule, is a great mix of enjoyment and divinity with its desert tours and ancient temples. If you are looking for a desert tour away from crowded tourist spots, Osian is a fantastic place that combines a desert stay with plenty of activities and a rustic ambiance. Treat yourself to a fascinating stay in a desert tent or a village roundhouse, enjoying the local cuisine and charming service. If at all the desert gets on your nerves, rush to the cluster of 18 Hindu and Jain temples, and you will be left marvelling at the exquisite architecture and sculptures built and sculpted between the 8th and 12th centuries. The temple town had over 100 temples, of which only 18 remain now. The winter months are the best time to visit Osian. The town is about 70 kilometres away from Jodhpur, the district headquarters. Jodhpur is also the nearest rail and air connection.

Sachiya Mata Temple
This beautiful and revered structure dates back to the late 9th century. Lord Sachiya Devi, the patron goddess of the Parmar dynasty, is honoured at this temple. The temple’s exterior features fine craftsmanship and stunning artwork. Wonderful detail is given to the sculptures, tower, eave, and pillar designs.
Surya Temple
This temple is a simple yet artistic structure perched atop a high platform and crowned with an especially lovely spire. This 10-century temple features intricately carved pillars in its mantapa.
Mahavir Temple
One of Osian’s earliest temples, the Mahavir Temple, was commissioned by King Vatsaraja of the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty in 783. During the 10th and 12th centuries, more of the mantapa and other additions were made. A statue of the Jain Tirthankara Mahavir seated in Padmasana is revered there. Elegant sculptures decorate the outer walls of the main building.

Vishnu and other temples

Numerous other temples, some of which are in ruins, display exquisite sculptural work and artistic towers. These include the Vishnu Temple, the Jain Dharmashala, the Harihara Temple, the Shiva Temple, and others (wherever the towers remain). The elevated stage is a hallmark of the world’s temples.

Desert activities

Osian’s claim to fame is in the realm of desert pursuits. Experiencing the desert and eating its native cuisine is the pinnacle of travel. Because of its proximity to the Thar Desert, visitors can enjoy camel rides and jeep safaris in the desert as part of their stay. An authentic taste of the desert awaits you. In order to provide tourists with a true taste of village life, enterprising villagers have built huts in the shape of a circle.
