Alwar, Rajasthan

Been there recently?

The historic city is full of monuments, with each of them silently narrating a story of the past glory. Tourists flock to the city for its forts, stepwells, palaces, and a host of other monuments built from the 16th century onward. Though the history of the city predates the 10th century, most of the monuments we get to see were built about 6 centuries ago, which are the legacies of the Islamic rulers and the Rajput rulers. The city welcomes you with the charming sight of the easternmost edge of the Aravali hills at a distance, which in fact is a natural protection for the city. Alwar prides itself in being one of the oldest Rajput states founded and one of the first to align with India after independence. Do make it a point to visit Alwar, whose rich culture, dharmic heritage and proximity to the capital city of the country have made it one of the top tourist attractions. Winter is the best time to visit Alwar town. It is located approximately 155 kilometres from Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, and approximately 150 kilometres from New Delhi. Alwar railway station is well connected to New Delhi and Jaipur. The nearest airports are at New Delhi and Jaipur, both approximately 160 kilometres away.

Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1958 and at present covering an area close to 900 square kilometres, the reserve has a population of 25 tigers as of 2022. The reserve was notorious for poaching activities, which wiped off its tiger population in 2008. After the introduction of a tigress from the neighbouring Ranthambore reserve and strict adherence to the project tiger guidelines along with proper prey management the tiger population has recovered.
