Dwarkadhish Temple – Gujarat
Been there recently?
The Dwarkadhish temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Krishna, who is worshipped here as Dwarkadhish, or ‘King of Dwarka.’ This beautiful temple is made of soft limestone and sand, and it looks like it is rising from the Arabian Sea. It is also known as Jagat Mandir or Trilok Sundar. It is thought to be about 2,500 years old and was built by Lord Krishna’s great-grandson Vajranabh. The temple has a spire (shikhara) that is 43 metres tall and has intricate carvings on it. It also has a huge flag that is 52 yards long. The temple’s sanctum sanctorum is in a rectangular hall with porches on three sides. The temple complex has two huge gates: Swarga Dwar, which means “gate to heaven,” and Moksha Dwar, which means “gate to freedom.” The beauty of the temple is enhanced by a flight of 56 steps that lead to the back of the building. The temple is a five-story building that is 100 feet tall and supported by 72 pillars. The bottom part of the temple was built in the 16th century, while the tall steeple, with its many small towers, was built in the 19th century. The interior of the temple is much simpler than the outside, except for the opulent sanctum sanctorum where the idol of Lord Dwarkadhish is kept.
