Kotgarh, Himachal Pradesh
Been there recently?
Kotgarh is a village in the Kumarsain subdivision of Shimla district in Himachal Pradesh. It is 82 kilometres from Shimla and is known as India’s apple heartland. Before being incorporated into British India in 1815 and becoming a part of India in 1947, it served as the capital of the princely state of Kotkhai-Kotgarh. It is a quaint and picturesque town located on the old Hindustan-Tibet road. The American missionary Satyanand Stokes started the apple cultivation revolution in Himachal Pradesh by sowing the first apple seed in Kotgarh. The apples from this area are now famous all over the world and make up a big part of the state’s GDP. The region’s ability to preserve its pre-independence charm is one of its best features.
